Vannon - Desert of Our Dreams - Album Review - Sludge / Heavy Metal from Oakland, California, USA

Today we are featuring an impressive sludge metal band, Vannon, from Oakland, California, USA. I have reviewed their debut album, Desert of Our Dreams, along with its character, style, story, potential, and more.

Vannon is a promising sludge metal band ("psych metal" they call it) who can restore faith in the metal scene in the future. These American gentlemen have just released a jaw-dropping debut album, Desert of Our Dreams, on the 10th of September, 2021. I personally think people who are into Mastodon should be aware of Vannon, and their incredible debut.

I am listening to Desert of Our Dreams for the third time while writing my review cause this isn't a regular album you can easily define. Desert of Our Dreams is kind of a record where you'll find the finest parts from many different styles such as blues rock, death, groove, progressive, sludge, and post-metal elements.

Vannon, in my view, showing true potential here in their debut album with their musicality and personality. First of all, I've had a great time every time I listened to this album. As a matter of fact, it has been a while since I heard such a debut which stands out with the solid personality of the band more than anything else. You don't see such things happening every day.

The band has influences from the traditional metal scene mainly. I sensed old-school black/thrash metal vibes in their sound, but I don't think there's any limitation here at all. From time to time they sound like Mastodon, Pantera, Opeth, and Blind Guardian. The instrumentation is fantastic, everything we've missed to hear from Mastodon is simply here. The creativity level here was my main focus, which I am more than satisfied with. It gave me chills and excitement every time I listened to it.

Lastly, I'd like to say a few words about their incredible vocalist. This guy has everything he needs to get his project to the Mastodon level. Hands down. He has the strength, power, attitude, tone, and personality in his performance, which I loved every single of it. Great band, special collective, making innovative music.

The only weakness I can add is the technical side of Desert of Our Dreams. I can clearly see that they have worked really hard to find a proper sound with personality, and I value this approach. First of all, this album doesn't sound like anyone else. Solid foundations of sludge metal, accompanied by traditional black, death, groove, and progressive influences is a rare thing to find. The only weakness here in my view is the mix couldn't answer this band's needs in some sections.

When I take all these into account, I'd like to say that I have had a great time listening to Vannon. They deserve to be heard, and Metalhead Community has decided to add the second track of the album, "Two Snakes" to TOP METAL SONGS SPOTIFY PLAYLIST.

Strongly recommended!
