You Don't Stand a Chance If You Only Work in the Evenings and on Weekends, says Blazy Flash of the Swiss Rock Band, Beyond Frequencies
Beyond Frequencies is one of the hot prospects I discovered during my first year in Switzerland and left a lasting impression with their tireless pursuit of success. In my interview with Blazy Flash, the founding member, vocalist, and songwriter, I delved into their journey and asked about being an independent artist in 2023, her outlook on the metal music scene in Zurich, and the band's exciting plans for the future. The countdown is on for the release of Beyond Frequencies' highly anticipated second studio album, "Me Megalomaniac," set to drop on March 31st, 2023, as the band continues to push the boundaries of the genre.

Q1 - How would you describe a regular day for Blazy Flash? What is the percentage of making music in your daily life?
A1 – I am an artist and entrepreneur, no day is like the other and that's what I love about my life. The only constant is that I sing and make music for about 2 hours every day.
Q2 - How often do you listen to metal music? Which bands/records are you listening to recently?
A2 – Almost every day. Although the term "metal" is very broad, I'm mainly interested in modern and alternative metal. On my current watch list is Thousand Below. I discovered the band a few years ago. Now they are finally back with their new album.
Q3 - How did you first become interested in metal music, and what led you to become the vocalist for Beyond Frequencies?
A3 – I guess it all started with Korn, I am a big fan. But I don't remember exactly when the flame of metal sparked in me, probably since the very beginning since I started listening to music.
I had taken a break from the music business for several years. In the meantime, I had written so many songs that a comeback was inevitable at some point. In late 2019, I finally felt that it was time for a new chapter, therefore I founded Beyond Frequencies. That my songs are now partly assigned to the metal genre has a lot to do with the fact that music has increasingly allowed hybrid sound forms in recent years. And it's enormous fun to experiment with metal elements to create new combinations and bring in my particular vocal style.
Q4 - How is the feedback so far after your latest single release, "All In"?
A4 –"All In" is the song with the strongest pop appeal of all the songs. No wonder that especially the radio stations and their listeners react very positively. Because normally our songs are too hard for airplay. The song is perceived as a real motivator for great resolutions. So if you ever have a low, listen to “All in” and you'll be back on track.

Q5 - What influences Blazy Flash the most to write music or lyrics?
A5 –It comes and goes in waves. Life and especially the moments that make us feel the ups and downs of life inspire and influence me the most. For me, the lyrics always come first. As soon as I have a topic I want to talk about, the melody flows as if by magic.
Q6 - What would be the three things that sets Beyond Frequencies apart from other metal bands, in your opinion?
A6 –That we are a hybrid, a kaleidoscope. Somehow nothing fits together and yet in a fascinating way it does. The three things that set us apart: 1. We are too clean for metal, 2. too edgy for rock and 3. way too dirty for pop. This contradictoriness is what makes Beyond Frequencies. And yet, or maybe because of that, everyone can somehow identify with us.
Q7 - What are the future plans of Beyond Frequencies for 2023?
A7 – After many involuntary delays, the second album "Me Megalomaniac" will finally be released on March 31. And we are looking forward to soon taking you live into the world of megalomania.
Q8 - Why do you think independent artists and bands usually don’t get their investments back? Is it impossible?
A8 – Nothing is impossible. For independent artists, it may take longer, it takes (even) more courage, the risks are even greater, and it takes even more stamina. Those who don't give up will make it. But if your understanding of "independent" is that you only work on your future in the evenings and on weekends, then you don't stand a chance.

Q9 – What do you think about bands who perform with backing tracks? Do you see it as "cheating"?
A9 – The audience is the center of every live performance. Whatever your technical gimmicks are, you should use them to enhance the experience of the audience. Backing tracks are a great way to add layers of sound. With today's technology, so many exciting sounds can be created for which no real instruments exist. Combining and merging these with real instruments through backing tracks opens up so many possibilities to make the audience's experience even more fascinating.
Q10 – What makes a band/artist "great"? What was the first artist/band that taught you something, and what did you learn?
A10 – Greatness comes from ceaseless development. The greatest bands sometimes have over 20 years of development behind them. From my point of view, the bands that are great are those that consequently engage in this process and realize that they can't skip it.
The process of Bring Me The Horizon taught me the most. Their evolution is insane. And the speed of development surpasses itself with time. Once you have momentum, you are practically unstoppable.
Q11 - A recent report says around 100,000 new tracks are being uploaded to Spotify every single day. How does that affect the music industry? And how does it make you feel as an artist?
A11 – The gatekeepers are becoming more and more powerful. Without personal contacts or without a label it is hardly possible to get into the relevant playlists. Instead of a democratization of art, the power has become even more centralized - actually not the original intention of Spotify.
As an artist, this can be frustrating. I therefore prefer to focus on the possibilities instead of dealing with supposed "unfairness".
Q12 – What can you tell us about the metal scene in Zurich? How does Zürich and its culture influence your music?
A12 – I'm not exactly a metal expert, rather a general connoisseur of Zurich's live music scene. And that is unfortunately very limited. Especially since Zurich is rather known for its party scene and electronic music. Besides, the audience is oversaturated, a difficult place for live musicians. Therefore, Zurich has (unfortunately) little influence on our music, we are clearly oriented towards Germany and sometimes the USA.
What's great about Zurich - all the big ones stop by on their tour, so we can see them all live in concert.

Q13 - If Beyond Frequencies was going on a tour, what other 2 bands would make the best line-up for the show?
A13 – Halestorm, Evanescence
Q14 - What would be your piece of advice for someone who wants to form a band and start a career in music?
A14 – Set clear goals, continuously work on them every single day, and always focus on your audience's experience in everything you do. Bringing a good time to people is the ultimate goal.
Q15 - Lastly, what would you like to say to your fans and to readers who are just discovering Beyond Frequencies for the first time?
A15 – Beyond Frequencies is for megalomaniacs who think big and go beyond frames and boundaries. If you are someone, who is open minded and finds pleasure in nerdy stuff outside the usual clichés, our music is for you.
