Lachy Doley is a promising blues-rock artist I discovered two weeks ago with this fantastic cover of the legendary Jimi Hendrix track, Voodoo Child, released as a single in 2020. For those who haven’t heard about the artist before, Lachy Doley has started his professional career with a long-play album called, Typically Individual Conforming Anti-Social (2011). Since then, the artist has released four singles; Pressure of the Cool (2011), No Key Left Unbroken (2020), Gimme Some Lovin’ (2020), Voodoo Child (Slight Return) (2020), and one more long-play album; Double Figures (2020). Lachy Doley is a very special name, as you can also see from the performance video of Voodoo Child. In his words, “In 2012, I bought an incredible rare Clavinet keyboard. One of only around 20 in the world that have been modified with a special Whammy Bar system to stretch all the strings inside. The way I play this keyboard can be very reminiscent of a Blues guitar player. So ever since that day, people have been wanting me to cover ‘Voodoo Child’. 8 years later I finally have. I amazed at well my voice and the Whammy Clavinet suited this classic Jimi Hendrix tune”. Now, please give the song a listen while reading the rest of the article.
Undoubtedly, Jimi Hendrix is one of the most influential artists of the decade, who opened a brand new window in everyone’s perspective, so we have rock and metal music today thanks to his game-changing contribution. And Voodoo Child is one of his most well-known and also signature songs. As you might also remember from some of my previous articles, I am listening to tons of new music every day. When it comes to making covers, I am quite picky and have huge expectations. We all have different views on how to make a proper cover song. For some people, it is just playing the song as it is, yet for me, taking the original song, cutting it into pieces, and creating your own song with your signature, understanding, vision, energy while maintaining the authentic vibe of it. In this case, Lachy Doley’s example for me was an exceptional performance, first of all, and also a well-performed version with his unique energy.
It was the first time for me seeing such an instrument and such a performer playing it. He is like a badass blues guitarist on his keyboard. Voodoo Child itself is too good for interpretation, and Lachy has done a phenomenal job by playing, recording, and filming everything. I loved everything about the song and the music video. As an artist and a huge music lover, it immediately made me feel like I should go back to the studio and record something new. And that’s what’s so special about people like Lachy Doley; they simply inspire. I know a few more people like Lachy Doley. They are so magical that you are ready to watch and listen to no matter what they play.
