Baiyou - Ennui - Song Review - Alternative Rock from London, England

Today we are featuring a promising alternative rock project, Baiyou, from London, England, with, "Ennui", only the fourth official release in their careers so far, released November 26, 2021.

Baiyou is a multi-instrumentalist and producer based in London, and this is his personal solo project if I'm not mistaken. When I think of Baiyou, I see someone who really enjoys the cinema, composing music, and playing guitar, which would be the pillars of his style.

First of all, the Baiyou sound is quite modern, yet instruments have traditional tonings, to be more specific, the guitar solo tone. The origins in Baiyou is quite western, I have heard jazz, groove, math, and progressive rock influences as its origins.

Ennui has a cinematic composition, to begin with. You immediately start picturing some images in your head while listening to these dialogues in the song. The music builds up the energy step by step, evolves to a groovy rhythm where we hear a beautiful sounding old-school jazz-rock guitar solo. Honestly, that's the most impressive part of the song, mainly because of the guitar tone. It is so smooth and woody, you can't get enough of this beautiful guitar sound.

The song energetically sounds fresh and exciting as a fact. I loved the current personality in Ennui, yet I don't believe this is where it belongs. Baiyou should continue pushing their limits. On the other hand, the song has a beautiful flow, yet what it leaves in your memory is its beautiful sound. The guitar player here plays a key role, above every other element.

Ennui technically has the necessary industry standards in its recording and mix, only sounds a little bit like "home studio recording" to my taste. The balance is flawless, tones are lovely, the atmosphere is always present, yet most importantly, it transmits the energy perfectly.

When I take all these into account, I'd like to say that I enjoyed listening to Baiyou, and strongly recommended for those who are into progressive/math/jazz-rock guitar music!
